YORKTON - Long before tractors arrived on the scene horses were the power source on the farm.

A good team of horses were versatile tools which worked in tandem with the farmer to do a range of things.

From the varied list of farm chores horses performed today comes the Chore Horse Competition at events such as Grain Millers Harvest Showdown.

Wednesday afternoon teamsters put their teams through the course on the Westland Insurance Arena floor in day one of the Newton Landscaping sponsored event.

Teams were hitched to a wagon and had to progress around a course that included opening and closing a gate, backing into a docking bay, and ‘parallel parking’ in the quickest time possible.

But teams also needed to be careful as a foot outside the measured course would add times to their totals.
