Canora curling club getting ready for busy upcoming season

Canora and area curlers can expect something for everyone, from the novice curler to the seasoned veteran.

The 2023/24 season was full of excitement for Canora curlers, right from the junior to the senior ranks, and plans are in place for more of the same in the coming season. There is a spot for everyone, from newcomers to the sport to those with years of experience.

CANORA - Volunteers are hard at work and the Canora Curing Club is looking forward to the start of the new season.

“We were very lucky to have several new volunteers put up their hand to join the board this year and help make the 2024/25 season a big success,” said Terry Wilson, Canora Curling Club president.

The ice is currently being installed, and if all goes well, curling is scheduled to start on Nov. 28.  “We once again look to offer something for everyone from the novice curler to the seasoned veteran,” said Wilson.

Regular scheduled curling will be as follows:

1). Afternoon curling on Mon, Wed , Thurs at 1 p.m. Players draw new teams for every game and play eight-end games. Just sign up and show up!

2). Thurs. night rec league. Enter a team of men, ladies, mixed, juniors. All skill levels are welcome. Draws at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Plan for some food, drinks and socialization.

3). Little Rocks kids curling Wed. evenings at 6:30 p.m. Youth learn the basics of curling and develop the skills to use as they progress into junior curling. Instructional component and fun games included.

“We also fully support school curling and are looking forward to assisting the school program wherever we can,” added Wilson.

He said they are planning a number of bonspiels for the upcoming season:

1). Christmas Bonspiel, Dec 26-28: Gather family and friends together over the holidays at the curling rink.

2). Ladies Bonspiel Jan. 9-11: On a new date for 2025, ladies start the year off right with some curling fun before the season gets busy.

3). Ted Palagian Memorial Stick Bonspiel, Feb 17:  A Family Day tradition. Grab a partner and try your hand at two-person stick curling. Fun for everyone.

4). Town and Country Bonspiel, Feb 20-23: Our signature event. Last year included a comedy show and banquet. Planning still underway for this year. Mark your calendar. 

5). Men’s Bonspiel, March 6-9: Eight-end games, great prizes.  Get your buddies together and teach them to sweep in houses!

6). Windup Spiel, March 27-30: Help us celebrate the season with one last hurrah before we pull the plug.

Dates are still to be determined for the Senior Spiel, to be scheduled on weekday afternoons. Pie and coffee are often the main attraction for this week long event.
