CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 43 calls from May 30 June 6, some of which included:
- three 911 Act calls,
- one assault,
- two break and enters,
- one Child Welfare Act call,
- one criminal harassment,
- one disturbing the peace,
- one false alarm,
- two failures to comply with conditions,
- one Fire Prevention Act call,
- four frauds,
- one harassing communications,
- one operation while impaired,
- four mischiefs,
- four other provincial calls,
- one theft under $5,000,
- three bicycle thefts,
- eight traffic offenses,
- two traffic collisions,
- one Trespass Act call,
- one uttering threats,
- and two prisoners.
Bathrooms can be dangerous
On May 31, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of two women fighting inside a business bathroom in Canora. Police located and arrested one woman for the disturbance. Police continue to investigate the incident to identify the second woman.
Converter thefts
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report of catalytic converters being stolen from vehicles in Buchanan on May 31. Police continue to investigate.
Suspended driver, car trouble
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on June 1 to a report of intoxicated persons having car troubles by Mikado. Police located the vehicle being towed down the highway by another vehicle. A man in the driver’s seat of towed vehicle was charged with driving while suspended and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Consequences of one robbery
On June 2, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP arrested and remanded a man in Canora for failing to comply with his release order conditions. The man appeared in Canora Provincial Court on June 6 and pled guilty to assault causing bodily harm, a charge laid in relation to a robbery that occurred in Canora on April 27, 2024. The man received a one-year jail sentence, lifetime firearms prohibition and provide a sample of his DNA to the National DNA Databank.
Country church break-in
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a break and enter at the Mazeppa Church in the RM of Sliding Hills on June 3. The main doors were damaged and entry was achieved inside. Police continue to investigate.
Three-year-old alone in alley
On June 4, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on June 4 to a child welfare call. A residence of Preeceville located a three-year-old child walking down the alley alone. The child was returned to the parents and Child Family Services was contacted.
Fraudsters claiming to be family
Between June 3 and June 4, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received multiple calls about fraudsters contacting people in Canora pretending to be their son. Acting as their child, the scammer claims to be in trouble and in need of immediate money for bail or hospital expenses. Payments are than asked to be made through crypto currency, gift cards, or money transfers. If you received a call like this, do not send money. Call the person they are pretending to be to verify the claims or requests. If you have been a victim of this or similar scam, call the Canora RCMP Detachment. You can also file a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
