Cookie Walk provides homemade treats just in time for Christmas

Canora United Church volunteers hosted their popular Cookie Walk during the Winter Lights Festival on Nov. 30.

CANORA - At the United Church Cookie Walk during the Winter Lights Festival, likely the biggest problem facing participants was that their bag might be full before they could fit in all their favourite cookies.

At $15 per bag, the Nov. 30 event was aided by cookie donations from 17 families. Participants were given a bag and a glove, and then turned loose to fill the bag with their favourite cookies.

Joy Stusek, one of the volunteers working at the event, said each family was asked to bake five dozen cookies, but some provided more.

“Bakers had a choice of what type of cookies to make,” said Stusek. “Last year there were plenty of ginger snaps. This year we had lots of shortbread and sugar cookies, as well as some gingerbread men.”

She said it was enjoyable to watch as participants filled their bags.

“One little girl, it was so cute, she set her bag down and ran around looking at all the cookies, and then forgot where she put her bag.”

Visitors were obviously pleased with the assortment of cookies available, since only about two trays were left over.

During the Cookie Walk, frozen perogies were also available. Stusek said they sold 25 bags, “more than usual.”

All in all, “it was a successful day, especially considering the cold weather. We are grateful to the community for the support.”
