From Jan. 14-19, Canora Minor Hockey players of all ages, along with other standout players from across the province, will be featured during Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, which also brings the focus of the entire province to Canora as a community.

CANORA - Starting next Tuesday, Jan. 14 until Jan. 19, Hockey Day in Saskatchewan will bring a province-wide focus to Canora. Stacy Vangen, Canora Minor Hockey Association president, said Canora and area residents have plenty of motivation to get excited.

“It’s a once in a lifetime event,” said Vangen. “Each year, Hockey Saskatchewan awards one community the exciting opportunity to showcase its hockey and skating community as well as host higher level hockey teams that will visit our community. This action-packed week has events for people of all ages and interests. The focus of this event is to not only fundraise for a new facility but also celebrate our community and the great things that happen here.”

On Tuesday, the spotlight is on female hockey to kick off the week.

“Female hockey players of all ages are invited to attend this event. They are asked to bring their skates, stick, helmet and gloves and to participate in some fun with on and off ice activities,” said Vangen. “The U15 Prairie Ice will host the Balcarres Barracudas for a female hockey game to cap off the night.”

Wednesday will feature a Canora Senior Cobras road hockey game on Main Street.

“All kids ages 12 and under are invited to participate in this event,” said Vangen.

The road hockey will be followed by a game between the U15 Highway 9 Predators (including a number of local players) and the Yorkton Terriers in a league game at the Civic Centre.

Getting things underway on Thursday will be Beer and Wing Night at the Civic Centre, followed by a hockey game with plenty of local flavour.

“The Senior Cobras and Senior Cobras alumni from the 2004/05 championship season, along with players from other seasons, will play an exciting rec hockey game.”

On Friday, it’s time for the Goal Line Gala. “For anyone looking for an evening out with a delicious menu, hospitality and entertainment this is the night for you,” said Vangen. “We are excited to have Monday Nooner hosts Barney and Brandon joining us as MC's. Local legend Don Chesney and former NHL enforcer Marty McSorley will provide evening entertainment with our celebrity Hot Seat. Look forward to live auction opportunities, socializing, and come check out what is being served up at the bar. Tickets are selling fast. Head to canoraminorhockey.com and click the Hockey Day in Saskatchewan link.”

Saturday, Jan. 18 is the official Hockey Day in Saskatchewan. The day will begin with U9 and U13 local teams in action, followed by U18 AAA Female Regina Rebels vs Battlefords Sharks.

The U18 AAA Regina Pat Canadians will then face the Yorkton Maulers.

“This exciting game will feature Maddox Schultz, a U15 age player with exceptional player status who is the top point earner for SAAAHL thus far,” said Vangen.

The evening will be capped off with Junior A action in a game between the Yorkton Terriers and Notre Dame Hounds.

Sunday, the final day, will begin with a non-denominational church service at the curling rink, followed by brunch.

Canora Minor Hockey will host U7 and U11 games, and draws will be made for all trip raffle winners.

The Sunday matinee will feature the Canora Skating Club with all skaters taking to the ice followed by the Battle of the Blades.

“Four figure skating and hockey player pairs will compete, with local judges to provide feedback,” said Vangen. “Teams will collect pledges for their performances to put toward our fundraising goal.”

After the Battle of the Blades, the silent auctions will close and there will be draws for the Fat  Bike Raffle and the 50/50. The minimum take-home prize for the 50/50 draw is $2,500 and the maximum is $50,000, with winnings based on total sales.

The day will wrap up with U13 and U18 games.

“For those who would like to support the event but are not able to attend, we invite you to bid on silent auction items, purchase 50/50 tickets or make a donation,” said Vangen. “Please visit our website to learn more about what’s happening at www.trellis.org/hockey-day-in-saskatchewan or go to canoraminorhockey.com and click the Hockey Day in Saskatchewan link or visit the Town of Canora website and scroll down the main page.

“We are so very thankful for the excitement and support we have received from the community thus far.”
