Invermay School News: Many activities in unpredictable March

In between the March blizzards and the bone-chilling cold, students took advantage of some nice weather to head out on their snowshoes and enjoy nature.

INVERMAY - The weather has been tricking us with different temperatures each day. Invermay School has had lots of activities to make March go by fast!

At the beginning of the month we had two ski trips that were planned for our school. The Grade 3 to 12 students hit the slopes on March 3 and travelled all the way to Asessippi to have a really good time. The Kindergarten to Grade 2 students travelled to Duck Mountain to do some skiing on March 7.

Provincial Impaired Driving Awareness week is recognized in March.  Invermay’s SADD Chapter Group decided to raise awareness through a spirit week. This week had many ways to show that driving impaired is not something that should be done at any time. Some of the different ways Invermay’s SADD Chapter Group showed awareness included:

 “Don’t let drinking high ruin your dreams!” - PJ Day;

“Use your head, don’t ride with an impaired driver!” - Crazy Hat/Hair Day;

“LEI off texting and driving” - Hawaiian Day;

“Throwback Thursday: Drinking and Driving is so old school and not cool!” - Decades Day; and

“Don’t carry the weight of an impaired driving charge!” - Anything but a backpack day.

The Outdoor Ed 30 activities have begun! They have been busy making quinzhees and learning how to ice fish. Participating students have learned how to bait a hook, start a fire, use an ice auger, proper jigging techniques, and other fishing skills. The students had a blast and would like to thank volunteers that came and helped out.

During March there is one special day that Invermay Red Cross would really like to acknowledge and that is World Down Syndrome Day. This day is celebrated for raising awareness to Down syndrome by wearing mismatched socks. It was a wonderful day to express such an amazing cause.

The weather was nice for a bit and it was great weather for some snowshoeing activity! It was amazing to get the kids out and see some of the wonderful nature views.

On the final day of the month our junior badminton team (Grades 8 & 9) had their home tournament and had a lot of success. They played strategically, played their hearts out and ended up with some amazing medals to take home, capturing gold in five categories.

Michael Mesias won gold for boys singles, Jazmari Luca won gold for girls singles, Jasmin Kowalyshyn and Elissa Karcha earned gold for girls doubles, Kashton MacLean and Kyle Pena earned gold for boys doubles, and Addison Enge and Carson Wood brought home gold for mixed doubles.
