CANORA - “I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I was two years old.”
Alexandria Martin is a newcomer to the staff at Canora Junior Elementary School this year, and has been interested in education for pretty much her whole life, beginning with her childhood on the family farm near Melfort.
“My main interests growing up included spending countless hours in the combine or in the semi with my dad and uncle during harvest,” said Martin. “Additionally, during this time, I played volleyball in both the fall and winter seasons, as well as spent many hours at the rink watching my brothers, and our SJHL team: the Melfort Mustangs. During the springtime, you would often find me at the ball diamonds playing softball. Throughout all points of the year I was often found outside enjoying the outdoors!”
Martin points to her grandmother as her main influence in choosing a career.
“My grandmother was a teacher, now retired and I remember her always talking about school and the wonderful job she had. Throughout various times in my life I flip-flopped to wanting to be a dentist, and my final decision was made in my Grade 12 year watching and reflecting upon all the teachers who inspired me to be who I am today.”
According to Martin, there are many things to love about teaching.
“Most importantly, I love to be able to connect with students and gain relationships with them. I love to be able to watch them grow, both as human beings as well as academically. I have always loved to be able to take the opportunities to learn from other people, and in my role as a teacher I get to do that every day. I am in a constant state of learning from both my students and my colleagues.”
After high school, Martin studied at the University of Saskatchewan, earning a bachelor of education degree.
“Before coming to CJES, I taught one year of kindergarten at home at Maude Burke School in Melfort. This was a year full of many opportunities to learn and grow as a teacher and get my toes wet in the career I was going to do for the rest of my life.”
At CJES, Martin will be teaching a Grade 2/3 split class, subject including social studies, science, ELA (English Language Arts), math, visual art, and health.
In her spare time, Martin continues to cultivate her love of the outdoors and physical activity.
“You can find me either outside or on a volleyball court,” she said. “I have a major passion for volleyball and have been given great opportunities to be able to coach young people and transfer my love for the sport down. In addition, I have a great love for the outdoors and spend any chance I can enjoying the weather, whether hot or cold. My favorite time to be outdoors is in the fall. You might also find me at the gym or in a spin studio! I have a passion for staying active and love to spend my extra time clearing my head, sweating it out.”
Martin said she is exciting about the opportunity to be a part of the community in Canora, “and learn about what the town is all about. For the short amount of time that I have been here, I am enjoying the welcoming environment of Canora.”
