CANORA - In their first game action of the 2024/25 season, the U18 Cobras hosted a five-team hockey tournament on Oct. 26 and 27. Other teams completing were: Radville, Indian Head, Yorkton and Park Posse, a combined team with players from Porcupine Plain, Archerwill, Kelvington and Rose Valley.
In the round robin format, each team played four games, one against each team. The host Cobras recorded a split during the weekend, defeating Indian Head and Park Posse, with losses to Yorkton and Radville.
“Radville had the best record of the weekend, going undefeated,” said Cobras Coach Adam Vangen.
Briel Beblow of Canora led the Cobras in scoring over the weekend, with three goals and two assists in four games. Bracyn Konkel of Sturgis scored a pair, and Own Lowe lit the lamp once. Logan Sznerch of Canora and Jake Soltys of Sturgis matched Beblow with a pair of assists each.
Keeping in mind that it was their first game action of the season, Vangen was pleased with the effort of the Cobras.
“We played well; we worked as a team and played competitively.”
This early in the season, Vangen sees room for improvement as the season progresses.
“We will need to learn to be more disciplined. Our biggest struggle of the weekend was time spent in the penalty box.”
Vangen said there is a definite advantage in hosting a tournament this early in the season.
“We get out early and we can try out matchups. We’ve only been on the ice for a few practices so the whole team is still getting going.”
In his second year as head coach, Vangen is eager to build on the success experienced by the Cobras last season.
“It’s great to be back as coach and I am happy to continue working with a great group of coaches. This year I have a better idea what to expect and am happy to be back on the ice with the team.”
Vangen is joined by assistant coaches Jordan Vogel, Dean Serdachny, Jeff Sznerch and Ryan Hauber, along with team manager Sherri Roebuck.
The Cobras begin their league season on the road, and then the first home game is on Dec. 7 with the Melville Millionaires coming to town.
“The team will attend a tournament in Kitscoty, Alta. in the beginning of January,” added Vangen.
