Ukrainian dancers draw a crowd at Canora Malanka

The Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dance Club brought excitement and colour in their performances at the Malanka celebration held at the Rainbow Hall in Canora.

CANORA - There are many different New Year’s celebrations, but the Malanka (Ukrainian New Year) festivities at Rainbow Hall in Canora on Jan. 10 definitely rank near the top of the list for excitement and colour.

After a tasty supper prepared by the Rainbow Hall ladies, the Ukrainian dance program portion of the evening got underway.

According to information provided by the Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dance Club, the group was honored to be asked to dance during the evening.

“It was an excellent way to showcase Veselka dancers’ dedication while promoting and honoring Ukrainian traditions and culture through dance.”

Veselka members taking part and the dances performed included:

Volyn, Intermediate 2 - Greta Craig, Chloe Doogan, Madison Dutchak, Mya Dutchak, Jevon Keyowski, Reid Kitchen, Tessa Prychak, Madison Auchstaetter, Eva Romanchuk, Hannah Dutchak and Ethan Chabun. Unavailable was Isabelle Kondratoff.

Poltava, Intermediate 1 - Kaydence Goulet, Layla Keyowski, Olivia Owchar, Karlee Boychuk, Sophie Monich and Jacob Prychak.

Poltava, Junior 1 - Daiana Blauva, Sam Malowany, Jennifer Monich and Lincoln MacPherson. Unavailable was Emily Kondratoff.

Sword Dance - Noah Prychak, Joshua Prychak, Jacob Prychak, Liam Trask, Jordan Zbitniff, Simon Craig, Reid Kitchen and Jevon Keyowski.

Transcarpathian, Junior 2 - Atlin Godhe, Paisley Mickelson and Keira Owchar.

Poltava, Novice - Shiandro Danyluk, Zayda Slowski, Samantha MacPherson, Emily Prokopetz, Ruth Schomburg and Ashey Hofley.

Hopak, Seniors - Makayla Heshka, Noah Prychak, Joshua Prychak, Isabelle Chabun, Simon Craig, Danielle Dutchak, Maddy Dutchak, Natalie Kosar, Rhianna Stefanyshyn, Liam Trask, Cassidy Wolkowski and Jordan Zbitniff; along with Reid Kitchen and Jevon Keyowski from Intermediate 2.

Following the performances all those in attendance had the opportunity to hit the dance floor, with music provided by the Zayshley band.

Veselka currently has an enrollment of 44 dancers in seven different age categories. Dancers range in age from three to 17. Instructors Liana and Serhiy Zabutnyy from Regina hold practices every Friday.

Canora Veselka Dance Club will be attending the following dance festivals the coming dance season:

  • Tavria School of Ukrainian Dance Festival in Regina March 13-16
  • Yorkton Kalyna Ukrainian Dance Festival in Yorkton May 2-4

Canora Veselka will host its 48th Annual Dance Concert at CCS in Canora on Sunday, April 6.

Throughout the dance season, Canora Veselka hosts a number of fundraisers.

During the fall, the club held a Mom’s Pantry and Ottenbreit Meats fundraiser. Currently, the club is selling Cash Calendars. These are available from any club member. As a non-profit group, Canora Veselka relies heavily on fundraising efforts and is grateful for the continued community partnership and support.
