Youngsters experience on-ice thrill of Hockey Day in Sask.

The U7 game pitted the host Canora Cobras against a familiar rival, the Norquay North Starts.

CANORA- The youngest age group participating in Hockey Day in Saskatchewan was the U7 game between the Canora Cobras and the Norquay North Stars on Jan. 19.

Scores are not usually kept at this age, focusing instead on fun and learning the game, according to Cobras Coach Dayne Babchishin.

“The players all love the game of hockey,” said Babchishin. “Any opportunity they get to show their abilities to friends and family are always welcome . We are having a great Under 7 season with players ranging in age from 4 to 7. Playing against a local team like Norquay is always enjoyable for the kids as they are familiar with their opponents.”

Babchishin said at this age, the majority of the focus is on teaching the game.

“At the beginning and throughout the season we focus heavily on skating abilities and the later part of the season is a combination of puck handling and learning the basics of positional play. “It's an honour for me to be able to encourage and nurture the game of hockey in these young athletes,” he concluded.
