About $4,300 was collected by Sturgis Kinsmen and members of the Sturgis Composite High School student council at their mini-Marathon on March 2 held at Canora and on the highway from Canora to Sturgis.
“This is more than what we had collected last year,” said Daniel Wasylenchuk, an organizer of the event which raises money for Telemiracle.
“This is the 24th year that we’ve conducted the mini-Marathon,” Wasylenchuk said, explaining that the group of students and Kinsmen had first canvassed the community, receiving about $3,000 from businesses and individuals.
And then about 12 people took turns running along Highway No. 9 back to Sturgis with each runner doing about a kilometre at a time, while motorists were encouraged to stop and contribute to the cause.
Participants in the mini-Marathon included: Sierra Meroniuk, Peyton Secundiak, Rhianna Olson, Shanae Olson , Kaeleigh Folk, Brooke Olson, Kristiaan Rayner, Nicole Tureski, Tessa Rehaluk, Allison Sopel, Carter Masley, Jalen Bayer,Zane Bayer, Ron Wagar, Brad Cameron, Craig Lisoway, Dale Lisoway, Nathan Seghers, Tyler Blender, Jim Prekaski, Dean Serdacheny and Daniel Wasylenchuk.
