An outdoors enthusiast who loves to sew is the new home economics teacher at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute.

Barbara Tanner was hired to succeed AnnaLee Parnetta, the school’s home economics teacher for several years, who has moved to Yorkton.

In addition to teaching home economics to students in grades 8 to 12, Tanner will be teaching grades 8 and 9 health.

Born and raised at Meadow Lake, Tanner attended Nutana High School in Saskatoon and then the University of Saskatchewan, receiving her bachelor of education degree in 2012. She has also received cook’s training from Capilano College in North Vancouver. She is a member of the Saskatchewan Home Economics Teachers Association (SHETA).

During the past two years Tanner taught home economics at the high schools in Warman and Hague.

“I love to sew,” she said, adding that she has made her own cloths, home décor items and purses and during her university years she worked at a Fabricland outlet.

“I also love the outdoors,” she said, listing downhill skiing, canoeing, camping, biking and hiking as among her favourite activities.

“I’ve been camping at Duck Mountain. It’s great and I love being here, so close to it,” she said, adding that she will be participating with the school’s outdoor education program.
