KAMSACK — The Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department was called to extinguish two fires during the first half of February.
A call came into the fire department at 10 p.m. on Feb. 11, said Ken Thompson, fire chief. The brigade arrived at a Carment Avenue address at about 10:10 a.m. to find a large shed or garage fully engulfed in flames.
A neighbour, having smelled smoke or seen flames, made the call, Thompson said. The homeowners returned a while later.
Nine firefighters attended the scene and worked for about an hour, he said. The building had contained only a few smaller items.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Fighting the fire was difficult on such a cold night the fire chief said.
“The water was freezing and firefighters were wet and cold, but they did what they had to do.
“We left with slippery patches on the street.”
The brigade’s first call of the month was on Feb. 5, to a vehicle fire on Highway 357 about six kilometres east of the intersection with Highway No. 8.
The owner of a late-model Ford truck had smelled smoke at about 4:50 p.m. and the cab became engulfed in flames.
No one was injured, but the vehicle was destroyed, Thompson said. Seven members of the brigade were on the scene for about an hour, extinguishing the fire and then cleaning up the road.
