CANORA — The new MLA for Canora-Pelly, Sean Wilson, is set to begin his first four years in the legislature.
Recently, the Saskatchewan Party announced Wilson would take on a house leadership role as the whip.
Wilson talked to the Kamsack Times / SaskToday.ca about his duties in the role.
"We [the house] do a lot of organizing as far as a close business. So, we order the speaker on our side to that extent. And we do a lot of training right now. We work with the house leaders as far as keeping everyone on track."
He added that one key responsibility is to ensure that there are a lot of people in the house at all times.
Over the past few weeks, Wilson has been learning the ropes of the new role. While provincial politics is new to Wilson, he does have experience representing local municipalities.
Wilson was the mayor of Buchanan for years and also served as the Division 3 councillor for the Rural Municipality (RM) of Buchanan.
Now serving the role of whip in the house, Wilson said he is "very excited" and called it "one of my dream jobs to have."
Wilson highlighted the main issues the government will focus on, including healthcare, education and affordability.
Representing a rural constituency, Wilson has heard many issues brought on by the local residents.
"Those things [healthcare, education, affordability] need to be addressed, and [it can be] from a government [that] is ready to tackle those things," said Wilson.
On Monday, the legislature began its first session since the election.
