Yorkton Council has unanimously endorsed a project at St. Paul Lutheran Church in the city.

Terrence Schneider, Director of Legislation and Procedures with the City, told the regular meeting of Council Monday that the City was approached by Lorne Niebergall, Trustee of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Board, detailing they were submitting a Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation Built Heritage Application for the of purpose refurbishing windows and facial boards to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

“As per the quotes attained by the Board, the estimated cost for this project is $7,770, including all applicable taxes. The St. Paul Lutheran Church Board is applying for $3,885, or 50 percent of this estimated cost, in the form of a grant, from the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation to support this project. The St. Paul Lutheran Church Board will be responsible for funding for the balance of the project,” he detailed.

In October of 1998, the St. Paul Lutheran Church was designated as a Municipal Heritage Property site.

“The Heritage Property Act states that no person shall alter, restore, repair, disturb, transport, add to, change or move, in whole or in part, or remove any fixtures from, without the written approval of the Council of the municipality in which the property is situated,” explained Schneider.

“The St. Paul Lutheran Church is seeking municipal approval for this refurbishment project which is a requirement of the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation Built Heritage Application process. Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation staff have been in contact with the City Clerk’s office and acknowledge that the St. Paul Lutheran Church Board application has been received ahead of the Mar. 1, 2018, deadline. The application will still be considered, but not until the City endorses it.”
