On Friday, December 2 the Yorkton Branch of the Saskatchewan Abilities Council hosted an event to recognize the "International Day of Persons with Disabilities."
The International Day of People with Disability is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
There are eight guiding principles that underlie the Convention and each one of its specific articles:
Respect for inherent dignity, individual autonomy including the freedom to make one's own choices, and independence of persons
Non-discrimination
Full and effective participation and inclusion in society
Respect for difference and acceptance of persons with disabilities as part of human diversity and humanity
Equality of opportunity
Accessibility
Equality between men and women
Respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities and respect for the right of children with disabilities to preserve their identities
The afternoon provided a lot of entertainment from a wide variety of performers, along with dancing and refreshments
