Everyone wants to be healthy, whether it’s a great-grandparent or a young child. A new Health Expo in Yorkton has started to give people advice and help them improve their health.
Nutritionist Glenda Nischuk, co-owner of the Better Living Centre, says that it was an event that was a bit different from most expos as they were not selling anything. Instead, they were giving away health information, screening people on what they know and what they can do to improve their health through a variety of different stations.
“It’s a learning, educational tent.”
The event also had activities to help kids stay active as well as a free pancake breakfast for everyone attending. Nischuk says having something the entire family can attend is important because health is something people pass on, as people develop habits as kids that they take into adulthood.
“When you look at our whole health picture, we’re not going in the right direction... Even our kids say ‘I wish we would have known those things when we were kids growing up,’ because those habits stick with kids. It’s just to make people aware of what they can do for themselves.”
Nischuk also believes that there needs to be a priority placed on mental health, as she says stress can be one of the biggest causes of problems people face.
“You can eat all the salad you want and all the healthy things, but if you’re really stressed mentally it’s not going to do you any good.”
The event was sponsored by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
“It’s a community service... When you think about what makes a community healthy, it’s one person at a time. It’s something to inspire the community and get them involved in being the CEOs of their own health.”
Nischuk hopes that the Health Expo becomes an annual event, and says that now that they have had the first year, they have a trained team that will make future events easier to put together.
