Two candidates for the Saskatchewan Party Leadership position were in town last week to speak with locals and raise awareness about their campaigns.
Ken Cheveldayoff and Alanna Koch are both running for the leadership role within the Saskatchewan Party. The position opened up when Premier Brad Wall announced his retirement from politics in August.
Koch and Cheveldayoff were in Yorkton on Sept. 14. Koch, who served as Deputy Minister to the Premier, spoke to several business owners in town, emphasizing her plan for provincial growth.
“A strong economy means we can provide the programs and services that are needed by the citizens of Saskatchewan,” she said.
Cheveldayoff, who represents the Saskatoon Willowgrove riding, hosted a town hall meeting at the Ramada on Broadway Street. He spoke to the crowd about his credentials and the policies he hopes to pass if elected.
“No one is going to replace Brad Wall,” he said. “But somebody has to take the torch and make it shine bright again.”
Other candidates in the race are Tina Beaudry-Mellor (MLA for the Regina University district), Scott Moe (MLA for the Rosthern-Shellbrook riding), and Gordon Wyant (MLA for the Saskatoon Northwest district).
The candidates have until Nov. 24 to file their nominations. The filing fee is $25,000. The campaign expense limit is $250,000.
A new Premier for the province will be elected at a leadership convention on Jan. 27, 2018, in Saskatoon.
