Sunrise holds May meeting

At the May 31, 2017 meeting of the Sunrise Regional Health Authority, Chairperson Don Rae reported on activities for the previous month. Employee appreciation events were held throughout the month of May and were attended by representatives of the Board and Executive Leadership Team. These events recognize employees who have reached milestones in relation to length of service and also to thank retirees for their years of dedicated service.

The report provided by Interim President and CEO Christina Denysek, stated training is complete for a group of 10 trainers in preparation for the 2017-18 strategic implementation of the FRIENDS Program and Project Alert. The training group is comprised of Sunrise Mental Health and Addiction Services staff, Good Spirit School Division and Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division staff as well as Sunrise Health Promotion staff. Training sessions for teachers have been completed with 60 individual teachers trained and ready to implement the program in their respective classrooms by the end of June, 2017.

It was also reported that the Community Health Educator, along with Mental Health and Addiction Services, coordinated a community health and wellness day at Kamsack Comprehensive Institute to take place on June 1st. This day is an effort to support and normalize mental wellness as well as highlight some upcoming mental wellness initiatives happening throughout Sunrise Health Region and, in particular, within the Kamsack area. Sask Polytechnic has reported very positive success with the Medical Radiation Technologist preceptors in Yorkton Regional Health Centre; this is the first year that Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technician students have been placed in Yorkton.

The board received policy monitoring reports on executive limitations related to asset protection, capital equipment, trust funds from previously raised community monies and capital projects.

The Financial Condition Report, up to and including March 31, 2017, showed Sunrise Health Region’s operating expenses are less than operating revenues by $2,716,571 of which $1,990,249 was for allocation of required transfers to the capital fund for mortgages, energy loan and reserve funds, leaving a general increase in the general operating fund of $726,322 or 0.3%.

The 2016-17 Audited Financial Statement findings for Sunrise Health Region were presented by auditor Darcy Spilchen of Collins Barrow. The health region ended the 2016-17 year with an increase in the general operating fund of $726,322.

The Annual Report draft was approved for submission to the Ministry of Health. The Annual Report, which includes the 2016-17 audited financial statement, will be tabled in the legislature and made available to the public at the end of July, 2017.

The 2017-18 operating budget was approved for budgeted revenue of $225,010,222 and budgeted operating expenditures totaling $223,032,074 with $1,978,148 held for replacement reserves and repayment of mortgages and loans. The health region employs 2,938 people, operates 26 health care sites and serves a population of just over 59,000.

The next regular meeting of the Regional Health Authority is June 28, 2017.
