Academic, athletic and extra-curricular excellence recognized at CCS awards

Over 100 academic, athletic and extra-curricular awards were presented at the Canora Composite School’s 53 rd annual awards night on June 6.

Over 100 academic, athletic and extra-curricular awards were presented at the Canora Composite School’s 53rd annual awards night on June 6.

            Megan Tomlin, a 2016 graduate, received the Governor General’s Award, presented by Shannon Leson of the Good Spirit School Division.

Grades 5-9 academic awards

            In Grade 5A, academic awards were presented to Michael Owchar and Kaira Kuhn. In Grade 5B, the academic awards were won by Nate Wolos and Jack Craig. Ethan Curtis received the most improved award for Grade 5.

            In Grade 6A, academic awards were presented to Zoe Thomas and Robin Skurat, while the grade 6B academic awards went to Jackson Krotenko and Meadow Ostafie. The Grade 6 most improved award went to Hayden Strelioff.

            The Grade 7A academic awards were presented to Isabella Mykytyshyn and Clay Sleeva. The Grade 7B academic awards went to Drea Beblow and Abby Wilson. The Grade 7 most improved award was captured by Codee Kopelchuk.

            In Grade 8, the first-place academic award was presented to Emily Owchar. Maxwell Mydonick took second place while Kami Kuhn won third place. The most improved award went to Emma Neratini.

            In Grade 9, the first-place academic award was won by Ashley Stusek. Ally Sleeva won second place and Emmaline Mykytyshyn captured third. Decan Cybak was the winner of the most improved award.

Grades 5-9 athletic and extra-curricular awards

            The leadership award was present to Kailey Sleeva.

            The peewee cross-country award went to Porter Wolkowski.

            The top girls and boys awards for peewee volleyball went to Hayden Parmley and Hayden Strelioff.

            The top girls and boys awards for peewee basketball went to Meadow Ostafie and Logan Lewchuk

            The peewee track-and-field award went to Kailey Sleeva.

            The peewee National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) award went to Hunter Secondiak.

            The top girls and boys awards for peewee badminton went to Meadow Ostafie and Ethan Heshka.

            Joey Palagian won the peewee football spirit award. The peewee wrestling award went to  Alex Goleski.

            Kara High took home the junior cross-country award.

            The junior girls volleyball rookie of the year award was captured by Rebekah Thomas. Ashley Stusek took the spirit award while Alley Sleeva was named the most valuable player (MVP).

            Clay Sleeva won the junior boys volleyball rookie of the year award. Jessie Biletsky captured the spirit award and Hudson Bailey was named MVP.

            In junior girls basketball, Lexi Biletski was the rookie of the year. Jordelle Lewchuk won the spirit award while Megan Barteski captured MVP honours.

            The junior boys basketball rookie of the year was Hudson Bailey. Jessie Biletsky won the spirit award and Alden Baron was named MVP.

            Junior drama awards went to Jacob Danyluk and Grady Wolkowski.

            Hudson Bailey won the junior track-and-field award.

            Clay Sleeva won the junior golf award and the junior badminton award.

            Alden Baron captured the junior NASP award, while the junior curling award went to Dorian Jones.

            The junior football rookie-of-the-year award went to Jacob Danyluk. Mathew Rock won the spirit award while Durban Hleboff was named MVP.

            The junior female athlete-of-the-year award went to Ashley Stusek, while Alden Baron was named the junior male athlete of the year.

Senior athletic and extra-curricular awards

            The junior Black Box Players award for drama went to Avigail Koralski, and the senior award was won by Graeme Wilgosh.

            Nathan Bucsis won the senior cross-country award, as well MVP in senior boys basketball. Graeme Wilgosh won the spirit award while Bryce Pelechaty was named rookie of the year.

            Senior girls basketball rookie of the year was Felicity Mydonick. Carmen Stusek won the spirit award and Mackenzie Gulka was named MVP.

            In senior boys volleyball, the rookie of the year was Derek Barteski. The spirit award went to Graeme Wilgosh and Bryce Pelechaty was name MVP.

            In senior girls volleyball, Grace Medvid won the rookie-of-the-year award, while Carmen Stusek captured the spirit award. Janayah Merriam was named MVP.

            Felicity Mydonick won the senior drama award, the senior badminton award and the senior NASP award.

            Rebecca Hort was named the winner of the senior track-and-field award.

            Bryce Pelechaty captured the senior golf award and Payton Zuravloff won the senior curling award. The SRC award went to Abby Gulka.

            The senior female athlete-of-the-year award went to Felicity Mydonick. Nathan Bucsis took home the male athlete-of-the-year award.

Senior Academic Awards

            Grade 10 academic awards for first to third place were presented to: Sabrina Moshenko, Felicity Mydonick and Jill Gulka. Brett Popoff received the most improved award.

            Grade 11 academic awards for first to third place were presented to: Amber Weinbender, Nathan Bucsis and Abby Sakal respectively.

            Grade 12 academic awards for first to third place were presented to: Abby Gulka, Carmen Stusek and Sidney Moshenko respectively. Moshenko also captured the most improved award.

            Level 30 academic awards were presented to: Abby Gulka, biology, chemistry, physics, and English (30A); Mikey Skibinsky, phys-ed; Sidney Moshenko, English (30B) and history; Amber Weinbender, foundations of math; Carmen Stusek, pre-calculus and calculus; and Ethan Born, construction.

Spirit of Youth Awards

            The junior female spirit award was presented to Clay Sleeva, while the junior female award went to Ashley Stusek.

            The senior male spirit award was won by Graeme Wilgosh, and the senior female spirit award went to Abby Gulka.

Crossroads Credit Union Awards

            The Crossroads Credit Union student award winners were: Brayden Goetzinger, Grade 5; Methyl Trask, Grade 6; Mya Wolos, Grade 7; Maxwell Mydonick, Grade 8; Emma Mykytyshyn, Grade 9; Sabrina Moshenko, Grade 10; Amber Weinbender, Grade 11; and Abby Gulka, Grade 12.
