Afrah Ali to stand trial for Saskatoon murder

Afrah Ali allegedly goes by the name of Afrah Abdi in the U.S. where he is a permanent resident. He is also a Somali national.

SASKATOON – Afrah Ali will stand trial for the shooting death of  Logan Nayneecassum at a now closed pub/restaurant on Slimmon Road in Saskatoon in 2020.

A Saskatoon Provincial Court judge handed down his decision Monday following a preliminary hearing to determine if there was enough evidence for him to go to trial. The preliminary hearing started in April, continued in July, and wrapped up in September. The details of what is said during preliminary hearings can’t be published.

Ali was brought back to Saskatchewan from the U. S. in July 2021.

U. S. court records reveal that a Washington man admitted to picking up three men on Jan. 23, 2021, who had crossed illegally into Montana from Canada and took law enforcement on a 76-mile [122 kilometre] car chase with speeds up to 130 miles per hour [209 km/hr]. Law enforcement used spike belts to stop the car one mile north of Whitefish, Montana.

The U.S. Department of Justice identified Afrah Ahmed Abdi, of Virginia, as Afrah Ali through fingerprints. They said he is a United States legal permanent resident and Somali national.

In August 2020, police had issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on a murder charge. According to police, they were called to the pub at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2020, for a report of an injured man. When first responders arrived they found Logan Nayneecassum suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Ali's matter has now gone to Saskatoon Court of King's Bench to set a trial date.

The charge against Ali hasn’t been tested in court.
