SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department urges residents and visitors to prioritize safety when purchasing, enjoying, and disposing of fireworks during the Canada Day weekend.

On this Canada Day, it is essential to note that low-hazard fireworks are the only ones permitted to be discharged on private property between dusk and 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, 1st July. The SFD extends its best wishes for a safe and enjoyable Canada Day to everyone.

Low-hazard fireworks are specifically designed for public recreational use, with a maximum height of less than 50 meters (160 feet). This category includes popular items such as Roman candles, sparklers, fountains, wheels, volcanoes, mines, and snakes.

It's crucial to understand that high-hazard fireworks are intended solely for professionals and can only be obtained by individuals holding a valid Fireworks Supervisor — Level I or Level II card issued by Natural Resources Canada.

Residents and spectators must remain mindful of the risks and responsibilities associated with fireworks. Here are some essential guidelines to follow:

• Carefully read and adhere to the manufacturer's instructions and exercise utmost caution when handling and discharging any fireworks.

• Choose your location wisely, as fireworks can only be set off on private property and Familiarize yourself with the space requirements for the specific type of fireworks you plan to use, as they may vary.

• Ensure that your chosen location is free from overhead obstructions, has ample clearance on all sides and is clear of combustible materials.

• Verify that weather conditions are calm, avoiding windy situations and ensure all spectators are positioned safely to observe the display.

• Properly stabilize the firework as per the manufacturer's directions.

• Except for sparklers, never ignite or hold a lit firework in your hand and always ignite the fuse at its tip. Never attempt to relight or repair the fuse on any firework that failed to ignite.

• Keep a water supply nearby to extinguish debris or smouldering embers before they cause harm, property damage, or fires.

• Remember, you are solely responsible for any debris that may land on spectators' property or other areas.
