After 25 years of service, the Canora and District Benevolent Fund Association is saying goodbye to Dr. Alfred Tataryn, who has been a member since its inception, giving both his time and energy to this worthy cause.

            Tataryn is moving to Alberta.

The non-profit group was formed in 1991. Its sole purpose is to collect and distribute funds to members of the Canora community who are in financial need due to a medical crisis.

By having funds available, the association is able to help local individuals or families that require financial assistance when they have nowhere else to turn. All money raised locally is used locally.

The association relies solely on donations and fundraising efforts as it does not receive government grants or regular income of any kind.

In 2016 alone, the group received nearly $7,000 in donations from Canora and the surrounding community, which is greatly appreciated, said a spokesperson for the group. Since the forming of the association, at last count it has dispersed a total of $66,768 to local people in need.

The association consists of volunteer members and currently includes Dr. Alfred Tataryn, Tammy Bobyk-Jacquemart, Gina Rakochy, Ernie Kovak, Val Morozoff, John Oystryk and Lorri Dennis.

Those persons interested in joining the association or wishing to make a donation may contact any of the members.
