It may seem to some like summer just started, but there are plenty of upcoming activities to look forward to as September approaches, said Aaron Herriges, director of leisure services.
Canora Swimming Pool
With summer winding down, swimmers are getting their last opportunities in the pool. Tomorrow (August 31) will be the last day of swimming, and will be a day-long open public free swim, said Herriges.
The pool season has been one of the busiest to date. Because of the amount of qualified instructors on staff, the pool was able to offer many different dates and options for swimming lessons in 2017. The staff at the pool hope to continue this trend moving forward, said Herriges.
On August 21 to 24 the pool ran an assistant lifeguard (ALG) training course for seven people having their sights on becoming future lifeguards. The hope is that next year the pool will host a water safety instructor (WSI) course at the beginning of the season. Because the management group is now certified, the pool is able to do the entire lifeguard training in-house which provides a lot of flexibility.
Mass registration
Fall and winter mass registration is set for September 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre (curling rink), said Herriges.
Groups attending the event will include: Canora Minor Hockey Association, Canora Skating Club, Canora Nursery School, Canora Homecraft 4-H Club, Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dance, Canora Arts Council, Canora Air Cadets, Assiniboine River Archery Club, Kee’s Taekwondo and Extravadance Studio.
There will be a special pre-release feature presentation afterwards. The public will have the opportunity to watch the latest Spider-Man film Spider-Man Homecoming on the leisure board’s 17-foot, high definition Screen.
Those who were at the swimming pool movie night on July 19 during Canora in Bloom already know what to expect, said Herriges.
Crossroads Credit Union and its staff will be offering complimentary popcorn and a drink during the film. The show starts around 7:30 p.m. indoors when the registration wraps up.            Everyone is free to bring his or her favorite portable chair or one from at the rink can be used, said Herriges.
Skating season
Skating season is not that far away, said Herriges.
The Canora Skating Club annual general meeting will be on September 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre.
The Canora Minor Hockey annual general meeting will be on September 20 at 7 p.m. at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre.
Golf
The second annual Big and Little Golf Day is coming up on September 30 at the Canora Golf and Country Club, said Herriges.
The day involves lessons for the kids, food, youngsters paired up with adults, and prizes. Last year the club gave away a new set of golf clubs to a participant. Numbers are limited so it’s best to sign up soon.
As always, it’s a good idea to regularly check the event calendar at the Canora.com home page to get up-to-date information about things to do in Canora, said Herriges.
