Yorkton Council approved a new Council & Committee Members β Code of Ethics Bylaw.
βOn October 26, 2016, legislation was approved that amended The Cities Act to require that Cities must implement a Council Code of Ethics Bylaw and use the new Oath of Office. The Cities Regulations were also amended at that time to prescribe a minimum Code of Ethics and Oath of Office. This legislation further requires that council adopt such a bylaw within 120 days of October 26, 2016, being February 23, 2017,β explained Kathy Ritchie β Director of Legislation and Procedures (City Clerk) at the regular meeting of Council Monday.
βThe Code of Ethics Bylaw defines how members will act when dealing with other members of council, municipal employees and the public and sets out a process to deal with contraventions of the Code of Ethics.β
The Bylaw details βElected Officials and Officials appointed to Boards, Committees, Controlled Corporations and other bodies established by Council shall adhere to the basic ethical standards and values set out, acknowledging that this code is not to be interpreted as exhaustive, and there will be occasions on which Council may find it necessary to adopt additional rules of conduct in order to protect the public interest and to enhance the public confidence and trust in local government.
It is the responsibility of each Member of Council to uphold the
standards and values set out in this code.β
