SASKATOON — A Saskatoon Fire Department investigator needs to do a follow-up inspection before allowing the re-opening of a restaurant in the 2500 block of 8th Street East.
The restaurant will remain closed until cleanup, cooking equipment, fire alarm system and the suppression system have been repaired, maintained and tested as being fully operational.
Emergency procedures will need to be reviewed as per the National Fire Code of Canada.
The decision came after the establishment’s deep fryer caught on fire Wednesday night with the incident being reported to SFD’s communication centre at 6:01 p.m.
Crews identified a deep fryer involved in the fire and used a Class K fire extinguisher which is used to put out grease fires. The fire was brought under control at 6:17 p.m.
A fire investigator was dispatched to the scene and concluded the fire originated in a deep fryer vent due to a lack of cleaning of the commercial cooking equipment.
The special suppression system serving the commercial cooking equipment did not activate and failed to discharge the extinguishing product on the fire.
SFD reports the fire alarm did not activate and was not activated to provide early warning to occupants and employees.
No injuries were sustained to employees, occupants or firefighters. The estimated damage is $20,000.
