SASKATOON - The SPS Economic Crime Section has received multiple reports in recent days of fraudsters claiming to represent the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).
The fraudsters are contacting members of the public by phone and informing them a parcel or shipment destined for them was stopped at the border and contains illegal items.
The fraudsters will frighten victims into believing they have warrants for their arrest and convince them they need to send money to avoid legal consequences.
Remember, a government or law enforcement agency will not phone you demanding payment. A government or law enforcement agency will not demand payment in crypto currency (Bitcoin). Before sending money to anyone based on a phone call, contact friends and family to discuss what has happened and check with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at https://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/. Fraudsters rely on fear and panic to exploit their victims.
