After the ballots were counted on October 26, Mayor Gina Rakochy was re-elected to run a council comprised of two incumbent councillors and four newcomers.
The four new councillors are Sheldon Derkatch, Brent Pelechaty, Eric Sweeney, and Kerry Trask, while the incumbent councillors are Bradley Gabora and James Trofimenkoff. Councillor Matthew Nehaj did not seek re-election.
Rakochy received 413 votes while her opponent, Glen Leson, received 321 votes. Two ballots were rejected and two were issued to individuals who declined to vote, which indicates that 738 voters were present at the election. According to the 2011 Canada Census data, there are about 1,820 eligible voters in Canora, so there was about a 41 per cent voter turnout.
After 12 years as a councillor and two years as mayor due to the results of a byelection, this will be Rakochy’s first four-year term.
With 11 nominees vying for one of the six seats on council, the five nominees with the lowest amount of votes were not selected. Topping the polls was Bradley Gabora (incumbent) with 432 votes. Kerry Trask (newcomer) came in second with 409 votes, Eric Sweeney (newcomer) came in third with 391 votes, and James Troffimenkoff (incumbent) came in fourth with 367 votes. The final two elected councillors were Sheldon Derkatch and Brent Pelechaty, both new councillors who acquired 342 votes and 337 votes respectively.
Not being elected this year were Cory O’Dell (incumbent) with 307 votes, Gerald Wolkowski (incumbent) with 289 votes, Michael Fetchuk with 232 votes, Robert Dorush with 217 votes and Sylvester Hrynkiw (incumbent) with 196 votes.
The new council will meet on November 1 for its first regular meeting.
