Air cadets from Kamsack and Canora met at Kamsack on October 8 for an introduction to biathlon, which is “an up-and-coming” sport.
With Lt. Darren Paul of the Canora detachment as the instructor, the day began at 10 a.m. at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute with Paul providing instruction, said Karen Bodnaryk, commanding officer of the Kamsack squadron. The event included 14 Kamsack cadets and eight from Canora.
Once the biathlon got underway, WO Taryn Broda led the cadets in a variety of sports in the small gym, while in groups of five, the rest of the cadets were involved in the competition.
In the biathlon, the cadets run, then shoot, run and shoot again, Bodnaryk said. Although normally, the cadets would run on the oval track outside, because of the weather, it was agreed to run the length of the school’s hallways twice. At the shooting segment, cadets used air rifles to make five shots at a target.
This was not so much a competition as it was an introduction to the sport and an opportunity for the cadets to make new friends, she said.
Cadets who enjoy the sport may register to participate in the cadets’ zone competition being held in Yorkton in November, and from there the top competitors will qualify to advance to the provincial competition at Saskadet north of Kelvington in February when, instead of running, the cadets will be skiing as well as shooting.
Cadets are preparing to do their part for the Remembrance Day observances, she said.
