Rounding out the need for four physicians in Kamsack, a new doctor who was born, raised and trained in Nigeria moved to the community recently.
Dr. Adebisi Alayo began working at the Assiniboine Valley Medical Centre on February 4.
Alayo moved to Canada four years ago, lived in Yorkton for two years, and then worked as a surgical assistant in Prince Albert.
“Kamsack is a smaller version of Yorkton,” he said. “I’ve been given a very warm reception here, and I find the area to be quiet and much to my liking.”
Alayo’s mother was a nurse in Nigeria and growing up he admired her dedication to her work. This sparked a childhood dream to become a doctor, and his work has become his “passion.” He has four siblings, one of whom is a practising gynecologist in Nigeria.
Alayo received his medical training at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OSU) in Ogun State in Nigeria.
“After university, I worked as a general physician,” he said.
Alayo’s wife is a pharmacist, and she is currently taking her internship, hoping to join her husband in Kamsack within six months.
“I have gotten quite used to Saskatchewan and its climate,” he said. “I am looking forward to summer and going fishing at Madge Lake. The area here is beautiful and calming.”
In his free time, Alayo enjoys meditating, reading and watching news programs and documentaries.
“I love my work as a physician, and my patients are never far from my mind,” he concluded.
