KCI GLOW club members urge students to “learn a fact; be a lifesaver”

“Learn a fact; be a lifesaver” is a tag line promoted by a new student-led group at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute called GLOW, which stands for “gay, lesbian or whoever.

Tending a table at the KCI under the new GLOW banner, from left, were: Ava Tourangeau, Micka Montana and Jalayna Bielecki. These three students are members of the school’s GLOW (gay, straight or whoever) gay-straight alliance club and they recently conducted a program in which they distributed Lifesaver candies to the students who returned to the desk after having learned facts about HIV/AIDS.

“Learn a fact; be a lifesaver” is a tag line promoted by a new student-led group at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute called GLOW, which stands for “gay, lesbian or whoever.”

A gay-straight alliance club, it began in the spring and immediately focused on coming up with a name and figuring out what it wanted to be about, said a release from the club.

“This year we have about eight students who are part of the group,” the release said. “We meet once every six-day cycle.”

The group has decided that it wants to focus on awareness and promote a positive way of thinking towards all people, it said. “So far this year we held a bake sale to fundraise, and some of the proceeds from our bake sale went towards purchasing a banner that was used in the Santa Claus parade and we use it at school during our events.”

On December 1, the GLOW club held an AIDS awareness activity to support World AIDS day. Students made posters of different facts about HIV/AIDS and hung them up around the school. During the lunch break students were encouraged to seek out a poster, learn a fact and come present their knowledge to the GLOW club.

When a fact was stated by a student to the club, he or she would then receive a Lifesaver candy in step with the club’s tag line of: "learn a fact; be a lifesaver."

“As a group we are hoping to do some more awareness activities throughout the year,” the release said.

The advisors for this club are Julie Gareau and Michelle Guillet.
