SASKATOON — The city is observing March as Race Relations Month, which will culminate with the presentation of the Living in Harmony Awards on March 21.
The city has observed March Race Relations Month annually since 1990.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa that occurred on March 21, 1960.
On this day, police opened fire on a peaceful Apartheid protest that was being carried out by Black residents in the township of Sharpeville.
Following is a list of notable dates related to Race Relations Month:
- March 1 – The City of Saskatoon officially proclaims March Race Relations Month with the release of this Virtual Proclamation Video and by raising the Cultural Diversity and Race Relations flag in Civic Square (area beside City Hall off 23rd Street East). The flag remains up until March 7.
- March 4 – This is the last day to submit a nomination for an individual, organization, student, class, or school for contributing to the elimination of racial discrimination.
- March 21 – On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the City's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee present the annual Living in Harmony Awards. These awards recognize local organizations, individuals and students for their efforts in promoting intercultural harmony.
