Phone scam uses supposed tax debt to threaten victims

The Kamsack RCMP want the public to be aware of a phone scam where a fraudster purports to be a Canada Revenue Agency representative and pressures the potential victim into paying a non-existent debt.

The Kamsack RCMP want the public to be aware of a phone scam where a fraudster purports to be a Canada Revenue Agency representative and pressures the potential victim into paying a non-existent debt.

The fraudster poses as an agent with the Canada Revenue Agency advising people that they owe tax money and must pay up, said a release from the Kamsack RCMP. The caller threatens people that if they don't act fast, their assets will be frozen and police will arrest them.

Recently the fraudster has called the potential victim back after threatening police action where the call display number is showing up as a local RCMP detachment, the release said.

“Should you receive a call of this nature do not disclose any personal information to the caller, and hang up immediately,” it said. Please report all calls of this nature to the local RCMP detachment.
