Saskatoon compost depots to open April 11

The Compost depots do not accept elm wood, sawdust, treated and untreated lumber, building materials, garbage, or animal waste/litter.

SASKATOON - Saskatoon's compost depots are set to open on Tuesday, April 11, allowing residents to engage in spring cleaning.

The depots will accept leaves, grass, sod, topsoil, garden refuse, pumpkins, non-elm branches, stumps, and tree trimmings at no cost.

This initiative helps reduce the amount of yard waste sent to landfills while producing high-quality, nutrient-rich compost and mulch used in Saskatoon's parks and community gardens.

The West Compost Depot at Highway 7 and 11th Street will also host the Dig-Your-Own program, where residents can self-load up to one cubic yard of compost and mulch at no cost while supplies last.

The site will be open daily, including statutory holidays, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. However, accessibility will depend on the site's conditions, and there will be restricted access beginning Tuesday to reduce traffic congestion and ensure safe access for visitors.

Residents should note that the West Compost Depot will only be accessible from Highway 7 southbound, with no access permitted from the Highway 7 and 11th Street intersections. Detour signs will be in place to assist with traffic flow.

Residents can also utilize the East Compost Depot on Highway 5, which will be open for drop-off only from Thursday through Monday (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays) from 11 a.m. to 4:50 p.m.

All loads must be covered when transported to prevent debris from blowing off vehicles within city limits. Please note that the City Compost Depots do not accept elm wood, sawdust, treated and untreated lumber, building materials, garbage, or animal waste/litter.

Residents are encouraged to compost selected food waste at home, and all food waste can now be placed in green carts. However, food waste is not accepted for drop-off at the compost depots. Excess yard waste is welcomed at both drop-off depots.
