City Water and Waste Operations Director Brendan Lemke explains the benefits of the city's green cart program.

SASKATOON — Saskatoon’s green cart initiative is off to a great start after last week’s collection of compostable wastes. The City has reported a participation rate comparable to that of the black bin program, with 22,250 green carts collected in the previous week, diverting over 559 tonnes of materials from the landfill.

Changing waste disposal routines is not easy, but the City would like to thank Saskatoon residents for putting waste in the right place. By diverting organic waste to the green cart, over half of what is typically thrown in the garbage can be reused for compost, thus delaying the need for a new landfill and protecting the environment.

For those participating in the program, here are some helpful reminders:

  • Green carts accept all food waste, including meat bones and eggshells.

  • Yard waste can go in the green cart unbagged; if bagged, use 100 per cent paper bags. Black garbage bags should not be used and may prevent your cart from being collected.

  • The kitchen pail can be lined with BPI-certified compostable bags, 100 per cent paper, or not lined at all.

  • Detach the kitchen pail and bring it inside to help ensure your cart is collected.

  • Follow proper cart placement guidelines to ensure your cart is collected.

  • Visit the city's website for tips on reducing odour and materials sticking to the cart.

Residents can visit the Saskatoon Waste Wizard app or the city's website to check collection dates, print their calendars, or set collection reminders. If you need help determining what goes in your cart, ask the Wizard!
