SASKATOON — The City of Saskatoon has been granted funding from the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund to enhance the pedestrian crossing at the junction of 22nd Street and Avenue V.

The grant, amounting to $80,824 and derived from photo speed enforcement proceeds, will be allocated toward installing a more conspicuous pedestrian-activated signal, pavement markings, and signage.

"At present, this heavily frequented area lacks pavement markings and illuminated signals to alert motorists of pedestrians crossing. Upon completion of the upgrade, pedestrian safety will be significantly bolstered," said Transportation Director Jay Magus.

Following the enhancement of the pedestrian crossing on 22nd Street and Avenue V, drivers must halt when encountering a red signal. The anticipated timeframe for the project's operation is scheduled for autumn this year.

Provincial Traffic Safety Fund Grants are bestowed upon communities biannually. The city intends to continue submitting funding applications to ameliorate safety conditions at other intersections and school zones across Saskatoon.
