SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to emergency calls on Tuesday, one of which was a car accident where an extraction needed to be done to save the passengers of the vehicles involved.
The SFD was notified by the Saskatoon Police Service at 11:46 p.m. after the latter’s plane recognised heat coming from a structure in the 1100 block of Avenue G South.
SFD dispatched three fire engines, a ladder truck, one rescue unit, and the Battalion Chief to the scene. The first fire crews that arrived on scene noticed smoke coming from the structure.
Utility companies that serve the structure also assisted by shutting down power and gas. Other arriving fire crews were assigned tactical duties and the fire was contained at 12:14 a.m. early Wednesday.
A fire Investigator was also at the scene and was undetermined on the cause of the fire, which originated in the basement. The fire caused $25,000 in damages.
The SFD also responded to a vehicular accident between two cars at 2:37 p.m. at College Drive and McKercher Drive. A fire engine, one rescue unit, and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to assist on the scene.
The caller informed dispatch that two occupants could not get out in one of the vehicles. Fire crews, upon arrival, saw that the airbags had been deployed and determined the hydraulic cutting tool was required to help the occupants of one of the vehicles.
Fire crews first stabilized the vehicle and ensure the safety of the scene before beginning to cut open sections of the vehicle to remove the trapped occupants.
The occupants were safely removed from the vehicle and were transferred to the paramedics on scene to administer first aid.
