Sturgis School opens its door welcoming staff and students

Buses will be transporting students when the school doors open at the Sturgis Composite School on Tuesday.

STURGIS - Staff at the Sturgis Composite School welcomed its students back for another school year on Sept. 5.

“Students will not see any physical changes to the building but will see some changes to the staff at the school,” said Kipp Bayer, principal. Taylor Derbowka is the kindergarten teacher who will also be teaching kindergarten in Norquay, sharing her time between both schools. The new educational assistant who will be joining the staff is Amy Galiz and Brigitte Herriges of Canora is the new school councillor for Preeceville and Sturgis Schools.

 “We are excited to welcome students back to school and hope everyone had a great summer. The volleyball season kicks of with practices on the first day back to class. Other sports will be cross-country and golf.” said Bayer. ”It is a quiet year with no big changes expected. Its important that students and staff are reminded to take care of themselves , keep everything in perspective and reach out if you need any help with your mental and physical well-being.”

Brigitte Herriges is from Canora and is the new school councillor for Preeceville and Sturgis Schools. She has a vast amount of experience dealing with mental and physical aspects of life for students. She has worked in Prince Albert and Saskatoon in the Child Protective Services, in Yorkton as a Probation Officer, and in Mental Health.

Taylor Derbowka of Norquay is the kindergarten teacher who will also be teaching kindergarten in Norquay. She is originally from Yorkton and attained her Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Level 3 from the University of Regina. This is her first teaching position. She would like to get an afterschool play production program started as well as get involved in the music program. Dancing is her passion, bringing with her experience in dancing all types of dances for 14 years, and she would also like to try the pottery classes offered at the school.

Administration staff are Kipp Bayer, principal and Bev Kardynal as assistant administrator.

Other teachers and support staff will be: Michael Andrusko, Nathan Hrynchyshyn, Meghan Hulbert, Carla Lewis, Sherry Lesser, Carla Olson, Desiree Checkowy, Kelsey Newman, Heidi Paterson, Kristen Peterson, Tara Romanchuk and Nathan Seghers, band instructor. Education assistants are Sheila Meroniuk and Amy Galiz, and Katrina Wasylenchuk is the librarian technician. Karen Boen and Adeline Mills are caretakers.
