On August 24 members of the Ukrainian Congress gathered at the Ukrainian Heritage Museum in Canora to observe the 26th anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine said Dorothy Korol, member.
The group observed the tradition to fly the Ukrainian and Canadian flags for the day, followed by the singing of the Ukrainian National Anthem.
Korol read some excerpts from the National Ukrainian Congress daily briefings that depicted a little of the current progress of the young country. These included highlights of the current state of the fighting on the eastern side of the country, progress in improving governing, the support of the European Union (EU) and improvements in trade.
Taras Korol followed by reading the following information from Paul Grod, president of the National Ukrainian Canadian Congress:
``Òn August 24th, 1991, Ukrainian Parliament (Rada), exercising the inviolable right of the Ukrainian people to self-determination, declared Ukraine an independent, indivisible democratic state. Generations of Ukrainian patriots struggled through the centuries to realize the right of the Ukrainian people to live in liberty and choose their common destiny.``
Ukrainian World Congress contributed a newsletter for this gathering and others like it, which included the following:
“In 2017 Ukrainians can continue to take pride in their accomplishments in implementing a national reform agenda, building strong relations with the international community, stabilizing the national economy, globally promoting Ukrainian economic viability, and further integrating into the Euro-Atlantic community. The ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association to come into effect on 1st of September 1, 2017, is of historical significance. The `Normandy Format (France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine) announced a ceasefire on the occasion of the beginning of the school year.``
