Yuletide Toy Drive aims to fill the ambulance and give to those in need

An annual toy drive is being held during the Winter Lights Festival to give back to the community and to those who may otherwise go without gifts for the Christmas season.

The Yuletide Medic Drive, better known as the Yuletide Toy Drive, is being held once again this year, said spokesperson Jocelyne Weinbender with the Canora Ambulance. The drive has been held every year since 2010, when it was organized by the late Byron Chayeski.

In 2015, the Yuletide Toy Drive gave gifts to 32 children in order to “bring smiles to kids whose families may not be able to buy gifts,” according to information from the Canora Ambulance.

This year, Canora Ambulance has partnered with The Bargain Shop with the goal of making sure every child in need is given a gift to enjoy for the holiday season. Weinbender also acknowledged Mavis Watson, who often informs the drive organizers of children who are in need.

Donations of new toys, books, crafts and games may be left in donation bins at The Bargain Shop, Canora Junior Elementary School, Canora Composite School, Canora Ambulance Care, Crossroads Credit Union, or the CIBC during business or office hours. Monetary donations may also be left at the Canora Ambulance office. All donations will be accepted until December 15, but food and used items may not be donated.

“We do this as a way to pay back the community and give to those who need it,” Weinbender said.

Those who are looking for more information or who wish to be considered for gifts may call the Canora Ambulance.
