CrossFit Function in Yorkton hosted its second annual Highway 9 Throwdown fitness competition on Oct. 15 and 16.
Taryn Dubreuil is the owner of CrossFit Function. She and Bren Thompson were the event coordinators for Highway 9 Throwdown.
“It’s a fitness competition that incorporates all domains of fitness,” said Dubreuil. “There’s weightlifting, cardio movements, gymnastics. Then at the end of the weekend, we determine who the fittest teams are.”
The teams are timed as they complete the various, highly demanding fitness exercises.
The ‘teams’ she is referring to are partners who compete together, and enter categories based on gender and experience. Overall, there were 40 teams of two who came from all over Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Winnipeg to participate.
Some athletes who were at the competition have been involved in CrossFit for more than five years, while others were experiencing competing for the very first time.
Dubreuil said this specific competition is designed more so for beginners to CrossFit, which is why she left it as a team event.
“I figured it was easier to try competing for the first time with a partner,” she said.
Comparing this year’s event to last year’s, Dubreuil said they had roughly the same amount of athletes participating, but gained a farther reach in those who attended.
“This year’s volunteer base was also bigger,” she added. “And we had larger sponsors, which is essential to running the event.”
CrossFit Function had teams representing their home club, two of which placed in the top three of their divisions.
Marc Dubreuil and Justin Yawney took the second place spot in the men’s scaled division.
Ashley and Alyssa Grywacheski finished in third place in the women’s RX division.
