GSSD track meet

The Good Spirit School Division held a track and field qualifier for the East Central Districts last Wednesday afternoon, says meet co-ordinator Mark Schendel.

The Good Spirit School Division held a track and field qualifier for the East Central Districts last Wednesday afternoon, says meet co-ordinator Mark Schendel.

Schendel, who helps coach the MC Knoll Elementary School track team, and helped co-ordinate the event along with numerous other GSSD staff members, said the school board had excellent weather for the event.

Schendel also points out that it is a mandatory meet.

"There's reports about kids being inactive, obesitywe do our best as a school division to not have those applied to us," confirmed the co-ordinator of the importance of this track meet.

"It's basically a full day of physical education."

There's running, jumping and throwing throughout the day and there were several records broken.

Approximately 500 student athletes took part in the day, he said.

It's fun, it's learning, it's participation, says Schendel.

Events included the three sprints (100-metre, 200-metre, 400-metre), two long distance events (800-metre, 1500-metre), field events (high jump, long jump, triple jump), and two throwing events (discus and shot put).

"Nine records were broken, I'm happy to announce," he said.

Jessica Lutz had an extraordinary meet, he added.

Lutz broke six records.

The extra importance of this track meet is that it qualifies students for the East Central Districts track meet.

From Wednesday's meet, Schendel says, two teams were formed.

There is the Yorkton Urban Middle Years team, made up of 50 kids, coming from the following schools: Columbia School, Dr. Brass School and MC Knoll School.

The other team will be the Yorkton Rural Middle Years team, also made up of 50 kids who come from Calder School, Springside, Yorkdale Central Public School.

Schendel thanks everyone who helped with the running of the meet, especially Leann Jarvis and her MC Knoll archery team for operating the canteen and the GX crew for the sound vehicle, Dale Sidoryk of Saltcoats for starting all the races, and the spectators.

MC Knoll will be sending 30 competitors to the districts meet.
