There were almost 250 golfers at the Canadian Nationals recently. One of them was Matthew Procyshen of Yorkton.

The Sacred Heart High School graduate completed the Saskatchewan Men's Amateur Championships held several weeks back at the Deer Park golf course and qualified for the nationals.

"I qualified through the Saskatchewan Amateurs," says Procyshen in a phone call.

"It was a real treat," he said of the nationals experience.

The Championships were played over not one, but two golf courses, the Camelot Golf and Country Club and then the Club de golf Outaouais; and play was suspended not once but twice due to hard rains and darkness.

Given the conditions, Procyshen finished the tournament with scores of 75 and 82.

"Overall I was very pleased. This was my first time at nationals. I've been an amateur now for 3-4 years. Both courses were tough."

According to the golfquebec.org web site, everybody went through hard times on the Wednesday afternoon.

"Play was suspended due to darkness at both Camelot Golf and Country Club and Club de golf Outaouais at 8:26 p.m. (EST). Inclement weather earlier in the day caused play to be suspended for just over three hours, before play resumed at 7:15 p.m., (EST). A total of 36 players were unable to complete their second rounds and will resume play in position at both clubs at 7 a.m., (EST).Third round play will begin at approximately 10 a.m, (EST) at the Camelot club."

According to Allan Sauser, head professional at Yorkton's Deer Park, this isn't a strange happening for a major golf event to be put on hold once or even twice, at the same event.

"It happens on a regular basis on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour. It probably happens once a month on the PGA Tour. You have to sit it out."

Once the play resumed out, native of Dundas, Mackenzie Hughes would go on to win the Willingdon Cup.
