It was the season-opening game for the Kamsack Atom Flyers on Monday November 12 at the Broda Sportsplex. The home team welcomed the Preeceville Atom Pats and came away with a well-earned victory.
The young players were ready and anxious to play their first game, as they had already put in three full weeks of intense conditioning and were ready to show the fans why they have been working so hard.
The game didn’t start as they had planned though, as the Pats drew first blood less than two minutes into the period on a breakaway goal by Bracyn Konkel, No. 6.
But that goal lit a fire in the eyes of the Flyers. They kept working hard on every shift. The Flyers team members were then rewarded with their first goal as Kealand Thomas, No. 15, scored with 12:09 left in the opening frame. By the end of the first, Hayden Quewezance, No. 3, and Chase Hembling, No. 9, each added a goal to send the Flyers into the dressing room nursing a 3 to 1 advantage.
The second period was fast and furious with Kamsack dominating the whole frame. The Flyers ended up putting home five goals by the time the horn sounded to end the period.
The goal of the game came in the second period as well. The puck was hemmed in the Preeceville zone for over a minute. A shot was fired at the net, and Jackson Gareau, No. 10, was busting his hump skating hard to the net for the rebound. Gareau was positioned perfectly as he took the puck onto his stick right after the Pats goalie kicked out the initial shot. Gareau had the poise and patience to fire the puck right under the glove of the sprawling tender. With authority he rifled the puck into the back of the net. The crowd went wild for such an amazing goal.
The third period saw three more goals scored. Two by the Flyers and one by the Pats. The final buzzer sounded and the scoreboard showed a 10 to 2 victory for the Kamsack squad.
