It did not start out well, losing 2-0 in their opener but something happened in between the first and second match and the Sacred Heart Saints girls' soccer club fired back with two straight wins and came away with the 'B' side of their lone home tournament Sept 24-25.
Coaches Laura Dean and Jeanne Fetsch are very pleased with the performance of their team so far this season.
"All the girls have excellent positive attitudes. When out on the field they all put forth great effort and play with enthusiasm." Despite a solid effort in the opening match against Prince Albert Carlton, SHHS got a good showing from goalkeeper Raquel Hackman.
The tournament featured 3 of the top 3A girls soccer teams in the province (Regina Campbell, Prince Albert St Mary, and Prince Albert Carlton).
Fetsch and Dean said they were particularly impressed with the rookies on the team- Gr. 9's Morgan Shymanski, Kaylee Ford, Madi Shearer, Kristen Jonassen, Allison Kruger, and Rita Fetsch, Gr. 10 Shayla Merriam, and Gr. 11 Hackman. They have fit in nicely with a strong group of returning players - in particular Sam Okrainec, Meagan Yagelniski, Kaitlin Inglis and Connor Rosluk on defense and midfielders and forwards Jenna Sahulka, Hailey Richards, Brooke Mentanko, Jacey Hull, Emily Kruger, Leta Perepeluk and Brooklynn Lechman.
The Sacred Heart girls performed very well losing one game (2-0 to Prince Albert Carlton) and winning their next two to capture the B side championship.
The Saints defeated Moose Jaw Vanier 1-0 and Moose Jaw Central 3-0. Both shut outs were recorded by Hackman and all four goals were scored by Fetsch. Both are having great rookie seasons with the Saints. Veteran Katie Woitas had another stand out game as central defender in the Saints' victory over Central. The record for the Saints improves to 7-3.
SHHs coaches would like to see improvement with more aggressive play and creative imagination to produce more scoring chances. Coaches Dean and Fetsch will be encouraging as many players as they can to play competitive city soccer with Yorkton United this winter to try to improve on their skills.
Next action will be today against YRHS and this Friday and Saturday Oct 1-2 in Prince Albert.
