Ken Orr of Churchbridge is going to need a slightly larger trophy cabinet.
He was recently named Master Athlete of the Year at the Saskatchewan Sport Awards banquet held in Regina.
"I really didn't think I'd win the award," he said in a telephone interview with Yorkton This Week. He said that he wasn't present on the night of but was notified of the win when he took a phone call while in Arizona. The Saskatchewan Cycling Association contacted him the morning after and delivered the good news.
Orr competed at the 2009 World Master Championships where he won a silver medal in the sprint event, bronze in the 2000-metre individual pursuit and silver in the 500-metre individual pursuit and time trials events.
He also won a silver in both the 19 km individual time trial and matched sprints at the Games. In Saskatchewan, Orr won gold medals in the 2009 Provincial Mountain Bike, Provincial 15 km Individual Time Trial, and Provincial Road Race.
At the Conexus Centre in downtown Regina, Orr's name was formally recognized for his contributions to the sport of biking.
This was his first time winning the Masters and had been a finalist for it four years ago.He's had many accomplishments over the years and was the only cyclist recognized that night at the Conexus Centre.
He's got four gold medals to his name for cycling, two of them come while riding mountain bikes and two from road biking.
They came from the sports series race, the provincial time trial.
Orr said that winning the Masters award recently tops the list and adds that he plans to take it easy for the upcoming biking season.
"The Masters has got to be tops," he insists. "This year is going to be a bit of an off-year for me."
Now, he said he has his sights set on the world senior track championships set for Lisbon, Portugal.
At the awards night in Regina, Orr beat out a curling team based out of Saskatoon, and a kayaker from Regina. Other award nominations that night included Youth Male and Female Athlete of the Year, and the Team Award of the Year.
