There could be a number of those ribbon-cutting ceremonies in any given year but this one was especially great, says Yorkton Mayor James Wilson.
"I get the opportunity to do many ribbon cuttings," explained the Mayor after watching local skater Nathan Grayston skate into a ribbon to mark the grand opening of the City's newest skatepark facility. "The initiative of this nature, this is the greatest," he continued to explain.
"This is great," he added.
"Why is this the greatest?" he questioned.
"Because of the enjoyment by all the youthyou can enjoy this no matter what."
"When this park was finished, I felt like it wasn't even real," says local skateboard enthusiast and member of the Yorkton Skateboard Club, Grayston.
"I was still in daydream mode."
Grayston is not in daydream mode anymore. Neither is anybody else.
People came out and stayed for hours Saturday as the skate/bikepark was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony, marked by Grayston going aerial on his board, tearing into the ribbon 10 feet off the ground with his board under his feet.
"Oh, this is great," he said after completing the opening with about 100 people watching and as many media as a Terrier game.
"This is one of the best skateparks in Saskatchewan," he claimed.
Aaron Kienle, emcee of the show and representing Cab Clothing, said this whole project has been long overdue.
"This has always been my thing," he said of skateboarding.
"We would come to Yorkton (just) to skateboard. There used to be a skatepark at the baseball diamonds (Jubilee Park). I feel that this has been the best thing to happen to Yorkton in my lifetime."
He said it's been almost exactly one year to the day that Dave Nussbaumer started the project.
"It's good," he said. "Just amazing."
