The Yorkton Cardinals of the Western Major Baseball League will look to an Ontario righty to be a big part of their 2012 bullpen.

Michael McCue, 21, grew up in Toronto, Ont., moving to Bradford at age 14 "where I still consider my hometown to be," he told Yorkton This Week.

McCueplayed with the Canadian Thunderbirds until he was 19, then played a year at Morton College in Chicago, Illinois before transferring to St. Clair College in Windsor.

"I am currently in transition into my second year in Advertising and Marketing Communication, as well as playing for St. Clair College in the CIBA, where I was named to the Academic All-Star team and received awards for Most Valuable Player and Top Pitcher," he said.

While McCue had a good first season, he said the latest campaign was more trying.

"(The) past season was a rebuilding year batting wise as run support was low," he said, adding "however I managed to go 3-3 on the year including a win in a one game playoff against York University to solidify our playoff spot."

McCue said he wants the ball on the mound and works at looking after things himself.

"I take pride in my ability to work out of tougher situations as well as not forfeiting easy outs with my glove being able to make the pitcher fielding plays when needed to," he said.

For McCue the WMBL is a great stop for summer baseball, as he commented "the WMBL is a high caliber baseball league."

That said McCue said he will look to his time as a Cardinal to hone his mound skills.

"I look to continue from my college season and rely on maintaining my location and work effectively with my circle change and fastball," he said.

The Cardinal season begins Junewith their season opener in Melville June 1, and home opener at Jubilee Park against Regina June 2.
