SASKATOON — Since the Christmas break, the Saskatoon Blades are 2-1-2-1. The squad is 26-6-2-1 on the season.
On the weekend, the Western Hockey League squad lost 5-4 in a shootout to Swift Current on the road on Friday and beat Red Deer, 6-2, at home on Saturday.
On Friday, the Blades led 3-1 with five minutes to play in the second period. The Broncos scored three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead. Egor Sidorov tied things up with a power play marker late in the third period. In the shootout, Swift Current’s Josh Filmon was the lone shooter out of six to score.
A three-goal outburst in the second period on Saturday night helped the Blades beat the visiting Red Deer Rebels, 6-2. Saskatoon led 2-1 after the first period. Trevor Wong scored twice for the Blades. Sidorov had three points on the night. Blades goalie Austin Elliott made 27 saves.
On Dec. 27, the Saskatoon squad won 3-1 at home against the Raiders. Vaughn Watterodt scored all three of the Blades’ goals to earn the hattrick. Elliott stopped all but one of the 16 shots he faced. The Blades were shut out 2-0 in Winnipeg on Dec. 30. The Ice won the next night as well – 2-1 in overtime. On Jan. 3, the Blades fell in overtime to Calgary, 3-2, at home.
The Blades host the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday. On Friday, the team is in Regina to play the Pats. The Blades return home the next night to host the Seattle Thunderbirds.
