SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Blades have been racking up wins lately in the Western Hockey League.
After going 3-0 last week, the Blades are on a four-game winning streak. They are 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 contests. With a 19-5-0-0 record, the Blades sat third in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, as of Sunday.
The Blades host the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday. They head to Prince Albert on Saturday.
On Nov. 30, the Blades romped past the Edmonton Oil Kings, 5-1. Saskatoon led 2-0 and 3-1 at the intermissions. Vaughn Watterodt lit the lamp twice for the Blades. Also scoring for Saskatoon were Jayden Wiens, Brandon Lisowsky, and defenceman Tanner Molendyk, who scored his first of the season.
Justin Lies and captain Aidan De La Gorgendiere each had two assists. Blades goalie Austin Elliott made 10 saves.
Rhett Melnyk scored the Oil Kings’ lone goal. Edmonton netminder Kolby Hall stopped 19 of the 24 shots he faced.
Lisowsky, was the hero last Friday night when his overtime goal delivered the Blades a 4-3 road win over Red Deer. The Blades had led 1-0 and 2-1 at the intermissions but the Rebels outscored the visitors 2-1 in the third to force overtime.
Jayden Wiens, Trevor Wong and Jorden Keller had Saskatoon’s other goals. Ethan Chadwick made 21 saves in the win.
Rebels goalie Kyle Kelsey had 26 saves. Scoring for Red Deer were Kalan Lind, Jhett Larson and Mats Lindgren.
On Saturday, Elliott made 34 saves as the Blades beat the host Medicine Hat Tigers, 2-1. Watterodt scored for Saskatoon in the first period, while Wiens had a powerplay goal in the second. Oasiz Wiesblatt scored the Tigers’ goal. Beckett Langkow had 22 saves.
